“Cosmetic surgery processes the bodies of woman-made women, who make up the vast majority of its patient pool, into man-made women.” (p.220)

Wolf,N. (2009). The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty Are Used Against Women. London: Vintage

Feminist writer Wolf describes how we are becoming a society of ‘man-made women’ through the use of cosmetic surgery.Sadly, today with the pressures of the media and social networks, many people are turning to cosmetic surgery for the answer.

Philip Toledano created a series of images called ‘ A New Kind of Beauty’ which has caused some controversy and mixed reactions. He has taken images of people who have undergone plastic surgery to the extreme through the self-portraits.

I found the images quite shocking and in fact disturbing at how badly mutilated some of these people look. It is a harsh reminder of the media’s harsh beauty standards that people feel they have to live up to but in fact, they usually end up looking much worse than when they were natural.
